We decided to take an evening to explore the area around downtown Frederick, Maryland to test out their food scene. We were thrilled to have a reservation at Firestone's Culinary Tavern. Their service starting right when we walked in was incredibly friendly and all the servers were working very hard which is very respectable.
The first dish we tried was their Charcuterie Board. We let them choose what was highly recommended for our selection of meats and cheeses. It was beautifully presented, and it hit all the right notes. The cheese tasted similar to thick cut parmesan which the saltiness paired perfectly with the sweet summer squash relish. Accompanied by nuts, fruit, and pickles to round it out even better. The torn apart toasted bread was delightfully crunchy and was a great vessel to try all the ingredients on the dish.
We got a free seafood bisque that was a fun unexpected addition to the meal. We highly recommend getting extra bread or crackers to dip in the bisque, delicious and a super cute size!
Another starter we tried was their Clam chowder that included littleneck clams, bacon lardon, classic mirepoix, Yukon gold potato, and celeriac puree. The clams in the shell were scrumptious. It had the perfect amount of bacon and potato, and the toast was amazing for dipping. Thick, grilled, and fluffy deliciousness. First rate!
Another unexpected free bite we got to try was their peach sorbet for a palate cleanser before our main entrees. It was light with a very refreshing peach flavor.
For Courtney's entree she ordered their Shrimp and Grits that included pan seared scallops, roasted garlic and parsley grits, tomatillo jam, and pickled jicama. The presentation was lovely and very colorful. The scallops were cooked in a way we believe would exceed Gordon Ramsay's expectations, beautifully golden on top. The shrimp were incredibly flavorful as well. The pickled jicama added a small amount of spice that was a great pair with the slightly sweet jam. The parsley grits were very unique and a wonderful base for the whole dish.
For Ed's entree he ordered their Wild Boar Tenderloin that includes local Fiero radicchio, Carolina gold heirloom rice, hominy, brandy and cherry demi-glace. He decided to go out on a limb and order something he has never tried beforehand. All and all Ed was super glad he did. The components were cooked wonderfully and full of flavor in addition to being plated beautifully. He's not sure he needs to try Wild Boar again but if you have and know you like it then this dish will surely make you happy!! Your foodie friends need to try this dish!
For dessert we got their White Chocolate Cheesecake that includes graham cracker crust and a cherry jubilee. We also got a bowl of their Key Lime & Graham Cracker, vanilla, and mint ice cream. If you love cheesecake, this is a must try for you! The cherry jubilee was the absolute perfect garnish. Their whipped cream was homemade and super addicting! Ed loves Key Lime desserts, so we had to try that ice cream flavor. It literally tasted exactly like a key lime pie in ice cream form. It had small graham cracker bites mixed in that added amazing texture. The vanilla had a strong vanilla bean taste that we loved. We probably would not recommend the mint flavor, but they have a long list of other flavors to choose from! You absolutely should not skip dessert here!! (Life tip - you should never skip dessert)
We are very excited to revisit soon! Our server was wonderful!
